New fatigue management trial recruiting now: The FLIP Study

**Many thanks to those who have shown interest in the FLIP study. Due to overwhelming interest the research team have closed recruitment to the study until the first 100 applicants have been assigned to their groups. We will post an update here and on our social media platforms when there is any information on the study reopening to applications.**

A new trial is investigating whether an online fatigue management programme can help reduce the impact of fatigue in people with SLE.

Fatigue in Lupus Intervention ProgrammesBackground

Many people with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) experience high levels of fatigue, but it’s not clear what might help manage it best. Most rheumatology departments have information booklets to help people manage their fatigue. Some hospitals also run fatigue management groups, but they are mostly in person so can be difficult for some people to attend.

What is this study investigating?

This study is being conducted online by researchers from Edinburgh University and NHS Lothian, and is the called the “Fatigue in Lupus Intervention Programmes” (FLIP) study. It has two main aims:

1. To see if an online fatigue management programme can reduce the impact of fatigue for people with SLE more than a fatigue booklet.
2. To see if an online 4-week programme is just as effective as a 7-week hospital programme.

Who can take part?

You may be able to take part if you:

• Are aged 18 – 85
• Have a diagnosis of SLE
• Have difficulties with fatigue
• Have not participated in a fatigue or pain management programme in the last 5 years
• Have access to a smart phone, tablet, or computer

What would happen if I took part?

This study would involve completing some questionnaires about your lupus and your experience of fatigue. So that they can compare how the different programmes work, you would be randomly assigned to one type of help for fatigue. You cannot choose which you join. The three groups are:

1). Standard care (fatigue booklet only)
2). A four-week online fatigue management programme plus standard care (fatigue booklet)
3). A seven-week online fatigue management programme plus standard care (fatigue booklet)

The online programme would run with groups of 8-10 people. Each group session explores a different theme and includes education, discussion, and group cognitive exercises. Each participant also has the opportunity to set a weekly goal and share their experience with the group.

You can find out more about what each group session would involve in the Patient Information Sheet for the study here.

How do I take part or find out more?

Due to overwhelming interest the research team have closed recruitment to the study until the first 100 applicants have been assigned to their groups. We will post an update here and on our social media platforms when there is any information on the study reopening to applications.
