Hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) is a treatment often used for autoimmune and inflammatory conditions. However, a small number of long-term users develop retinal toxicity (damage to the retinas in the eye), also known as HCQ retinopathy. This can lead to permanent sight loss.
This study aims to improve early detection of HCQ retinopathy and personalised risk prediction (how likely someone will develop it). This will be done by looking at clinical data, images of retinas, and genetic samples (DNA) from patients taking HCQ.

Location:
- Consent is given over the phone
- The blood test could be taken at your local GP – the research team will help make this happen
When:
At a time that suits you. The research team will arrange a time for 1) the phone call and 2) the GP appointment for blood tests, around you.
What’s involved:
- Complete an informed consent form (to confirm you are happy to take part)
- Have images of your retinas taken (OCT and/or autofluorescence imaging) if this has not already been done by your clinician
- Give a blood sample (so your DNA can be analysed)
You do not need to change your normal treatment schedule.

You may be able to join if you:
- Are aged 18+
- Have been taking HCQ long-term (usually for more than 5 years)
This study is open to people will all types of lupus.
