The ADAPT Trial
A team of researchers, patients and clinicians are looking at whether Pilates or Tai Chi online group classes can reduce fatigue and improve quality of life. 

Location: Online
Deadline: Recruitment closes when the study is full. Spaces are limited, so early sign-up is encouraged.

What’s involved: 

  • Complete online screening questionnaire  
  • Eligible participants will be randomly allocated to 1 of 3 groups:  
    1. Pilates classes (1hr online class, twice a week for 8 weeks total)
    2. Tai Chi classes (1hr online class, twice a week for 8 weeks total)
    3. Control group (no classes)  
  • Complete online questionnaires at baseline, 10-weeks, 18-weeks and 6 months 

The exercise classes are specifically adapted for people with chronic diseases. The instructor will offer modifications to suit every level of ability, with regular breaks throughout.

Who:

You may be able to join if you: 

  • Are diagnosed with a rheumatological disease (such as lupus, UCTD or MCTD) 
  • Currently experience fatigue that impacts your daily life 
  • Do not currently attend a regular exercise class, either in person or online, once a week or more regularly 
  • Are aged 18+ and based in the UK 

Pilates and Tai Chi are for everyone – the study team encourages people of all genders and ages to apply! 

Why your involvement matters:  

The research team believe the information gained from this trial will very helpful. It will help let doctors and researchers know about the impacts of sociable online exercise classes on people with systemic autoimmune rheumatic diseases. You will be contributing to research that aims to improve the lives of people with systemic autoimmune rheumatic diseases.
