Why run for Lupus UK?

Chris Clarke

“I had convinced myself that what I considered my very busy and stressful professional and family life was “normal” and that running on fumes was how life was meant to be. I had always thought that being “stressed” was reserved for those facing extreme life challenges and that as long as I stayed positive that general life challenges should be manageable. As long as I could get my daily run in to decompress then I would be fine. How wrong I was.

I had completely failed to take into account the physical impact that stress can have on the body. After years of internalising everything and using my body as a stress sponge, it finally started to fight back. Slowly a number of what seemed to be random physical symptoms started to develop and after months of tests and consultations, I was diagnosed with lupus in November 2023.”

Sean Huggins

“My name’s Sean, I’m a 36 year old, dad of 3 young boys and I have been widowed after losing my wife Lucy on the 08/01/23.

Lucy suffered her entire adult life with Lupus SLE and lupus nephritis. This caused severe kidney damage and a long list of ailments that impacted her daily life so much.

On the surface though you would never have realised that Lucy had so much going on inside her body, she was full of life in so many ways. She was hilarious, bubbly, happy, caring and universally loved by everyone she met.

Lupus is not a well understood disease and it is very difficult to diagnose. There is no one test that tells you that you have lupus and it comes in many different forms. Some people have it quite severely like Lucy and some a milder version. However, everyone who has it, is affected on a daily basis. I watched my Lucy’s health deteriorate in front of my eyes over the last few years and although it wasn’t Lupus directly that caused Lucy’s death, it was the years and years of high blood pressure, kidney damage and a compromised immune system which led to Lucy’s body succumbing to a very rare illness called HLH.

I made a promise to Lucy in her ear as I held her hand and watched her slip away to another place that I would never let her be forgotten and that her kids would always know who she was and what an incredible human being she was. That is a promise I intend to keep and never give up on for the rest of my life.”
